Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility

Program Overview

The Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility is a 20 bed facility designed to treat children and adolescents, ages 6 to 18, which have been diagnosed with psychiatric disorders. The PRTF provides specialized medical psychiatric, psychosocial and behavioral treatment services to assist youth and their families in gaining the skills necessary to demonstrate mental health and positive community adjustment.

The Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facilities serves youth that have a history of serious problem behavior with symptoms which are persistent, unpredictable and which may jeopardize the health and safety of others. These symptoms may include severe impulsivity, mood swings, explosive episodes, self-harm behaviors or assaultive behavior. In addition, these children and adolescents have a history of failure in less intensive treatment settings. While they do not need the level of care an acute psychiatric hospital offers, they nevertheless have a need for a supervised, safe environment, as well as specialized therapies. The goal is to enable each youth to progress quickly to a less restrictive level of care. Admission requirements include a psychiatric diagnosis, and a referral from a psychiatrist, physician or licensed psychologist.

The Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facilities is part of an array of services provided by CHI Health, which offers many advantages: As the youth move from one level of care to the next, the therapeutic multidisciplinary approach is consistent.

The Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facilities is located in a safe, secure environment, structured to serve intensely disturbed youth. Just as important, is the fact that the environment promotes positive self-esteem and age-appropriate behavior through the use of the therapeutic milieu. The youth, family, guardian and the referring or anticipated service agency are actively involved in the on-going multi-disciplinary treatment process.

The Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facilities is prepared to deal with any psychiatric/medical emergency in a timely manner because of our close relationship with the acute care programs.

A multi-disciplinary team under the direction of the Medical Director provides individualized treatment. The therapeutic milieu is developed under the direction of the PRTF Medical Director and Operations Director, and is implemented by all members of the treatment team. The multi-disciplinary team consists of psychiatric registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, social workers/therapists, recreational therapist, educational therapists and behavioral service technicians. Other professionals support the treatment team in areas of Pastoral Care, Pharmacy and Dietary Services.

All youth will be engaged in active treatment incorporating individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, community meeting, medication management, psycho-educational therapy, and therapeutic outings and passes. The program also utilizes a privilege level economy system which is intended to be used as a skill building process through which youth are supervised and guided by staff. As youth demonstrate acceptable behaviors in the social and interpersonal skill areas, adult supervision and needed therapeutic interactions will diminish in intensity and frequency. In order to motivate the residents, they will earn positive and negative consequences for their behaviors. The privilege level economy system is consistently modified as needed, to address various developmental needs and intellectual functioning, and is monitored by the treatment team on an on-going basis.

The involvement of the family/legal guardian is critical in the treatment of the youth. Families are expected to be involved in family therapy throughout the treatment process. We believe that treatment of a youth should be provided within the context of his/her family, whenever possible, and that the family and youth need to be actively involved in the multi-disciplinary treatment planning process.

Program Services

The services that compose the program include:

individual, group, and family psychotherapy, educational services, social skills building, life skills teaching, goal setting, recreational/leisure activities, therapeutic teaching interactions, and therapeutic outings and passes. • Develop a better understanding of the stages of treatment.
  • Recognize the family dynamics and how they affect the child’s diagnosis.

Family therapy may include married couples, parent-child, extended family relationships and sibling relationships. Care conferences with program staff may initiate this therapy.
