Adult care is provided through our Mental Health Services (Acute Inpatient at CHI Health Immanuel and Mercy Hospital) and Psychiatric Associates (Outpatient Clinics and Partial Hospitalization Programs).

Acute Inpatient

Acute inpatient treatment is for adult patients with severe psychiatric needs. The goal is stabilization of the patient presenting symptoms and to restore him/her to an improved quality of life. Referrals to adult acute inpatient treatment may be made by any of the following: a psychiatrist and/or a physician, by the Department of Social Services, schools, family, courts, therapists, psychologists, Emergency Departments of CHI Health hospitals or clergy.

After initial evaluation by the physician, the interdisciplinary team will further assess the patient. These professionals collaborate with the patient and the patient’s family to draft a plan of care to begin the healing process. Progress is monitored closely, and when appropriate, the patient proceeds to the next level of care.

When a patient has been stabilized and achieved the maximum benefit from acute care, follow-up care will be offered on an outpatient basis. CHI Health provides follow-up care through its outpatient programs in many convenient locations. The interdisciplinary team provides medical, biological, social, spiritual, behavioral and emotional support.

Outpatient

For persons experiencing mental health issues that are disrupting interpersonal, family or work life, we provide short-term, problem-focused therapy services or recommend longer courses of treatment for clients requiring additional assistance in achieving stabilization. Treatment modalities include individual, group, marital, family, psychopharmacological and others based on individual assessment. The treatment goal is to restore and stabilize the client to his or her previous level of functioning.

In therapy, clients learn improved life skills to promote their mental health and wellness. Often, clients are able to maintain their mental health without continuous follow-up. Some clients may be referred to community support groups to be more self-reliant and learn additional life skills.

The team may include physicians, nurse practitioners, psychologists (when indicated), therapists, client and significant others, as appropriate.

Partial Hospitalization & Intensive Outpatient Treatment

Adult patients who are in acute distress or have just completed an episode of acute inpatient care may participate in the Partial Hospitalization Program if they are able to function independently and participate actively.  This is a short-term, ambulatory, active treatment program to help each patient regain a balance in body, mind and spirit through therapeutically intensive and structured clinical services.  When the patient has met treatment goals and no longer needs the partial level of care, follow-up outpatient care will be arranged. CHI Health provides outpatient services in many locations throughout the Omaha/Council Bluffs metropolitan area.  Professionals on this team may include a psychiatrist, therapist, registered nurse, and therapeutic recreational specialist. Additional members may include pastoral care or a dietitian. Other adjunct treatment team members are available as needed.

Patients must be referred for this service following a brief inpatient hospitalization or by their outpatient psychiatrist or therapist. The Partial Hospitalization Program provides crisis stabilization through daily, intensive programming. All patients referred are screened to determine the appropriateness of intensive outpatient care. Upon admission, patients and staff members together develop an individual treatment plan. Patients are treated with an interdisciplinary approach.

Chemical Dependency

Outpatient

This service is for any individual with chemical dependency issues seeking long-term abstinence and resolution of underlying issues. It provides the level of care needed develop an individualized treatment plan based on the needs of the patient and significant others. Through individual and/or group therapy, patients will clearly understand the precipitating factors for personal alcohol and drug abuse issues. They will explore abstinence-centered alternatives, become familiar with community support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous and/or Narcotics Anonymous, improve coping skills, demonstrate the ability to remain abstinent and gain a greater insight into their personal spirituality.

Outpatient Continued Care

This service bridges the gap between the treatment program and the self-help community for clients who have successfully completed a chemical dependency program.  The treatment team of physician, nurse, therapist and client provides coordination and referral of community resources.

Outpatient Relapse

As part of chemical dependency treatment, all clients receive relapse prevention treatment. Clients having difficulty maintaining or obtaining abstinence receive intensive relapse focus. Treatment involves recognition of high-risk situations and development of management strategies, a sobriety support system and a relapse prevention plan. Clients may be referred to a more intense level of treatment, psychotherapeutic counseling, other sobriety support systems or community agencies.

Intervention Counseling

This service provides the family, friends and employers of addicted individuals with knowledge and understanding of the addictive process and its detrimental effects on their own lives. An initial assessment with family, friends and perhaps even employers determines the treatment plan. The treatment team includes physician, therapist and significant others.
