The Gift of Life: CHI Health to Open New Donor Care Unit
CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center - Bergan Mercy is excited to announce the opening of the first and only dedicated Donor Care Unit in the region.
The revitalized organ donation program, in partnership with Live On Nebraska, features a new, private suite within the ICU designed to offer comfort and support to families during the organ donation process. This dedicated area provides a calm, quiet space for grieving, reflection and rest. The newly appointed Donor Care Council has also enhanced the honor walk with new music and created a large mural in the main lobby, featuring a dandelion with seeds symbolizing the lives touched through organ donation.
CHI Health doesn’t perform transplants but serves as a donation or procurement site, meaning the generous gifts of organ donors can benefit individuals across the country. That impact is significant: in 2023 alone, 21 donors provided 78 organs for transplant. This year, donor generosity has already increased, with 27 donors resulting in 71 transplants so far. Additionally, the new Donor Care Unit has facilitated 16 transfers, leading to 27 organ transplants to date.
"Our mission is compassionate care. The organ donation process is incredibly challenging, and this new space and enhanced program reflect our deep commitment to honoring the selfless gift of organ donation and supporting families during this difficult time," said Dennis Bierle, President of CHI Health CUMC - Bergan Mercy.
CUMC - Bergan Mercy is now the designated primary organ procurement site for all CHI Health hospitals across Nebraska and southwest Iowa. This streamlined process ensures efficient, compassionate care for both donor families and recipients.
“The impact of organ donation is profound, and this new area gives families a peaceful space to reflect and honor their loved one’s legacy,” said Alison Williamson, CHI Health ICU Manager and Donor Care Council Chair. “We are so thankful for the support and partnership with Live On Nebraska, working hand in hand with them to make this a reality has truly been special.”
